Annmarie Sculpture Garden
During the summer of 2017, I was the artist-in-residence at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, a Smithsonian affiliate in Southern Maryland. During my tenure there, I designed, created, and installed a public art project while also producing individual work. The public art project, Chesapeake Menagerie, involved the creation of 11 sculptures made from “trash,” as well as materials donated to the art center. All of the sculptures depicted regional animals, which I chose in collaboration with the staff naturalist. One stage of each sculpture’s creation involved public participation: pasting “trash” to the sculpture base. The completed sculptures were installed at the center’s children’s garden in time for ArtsFest, an annual celebration involving artists and vendors from across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
