Private Montessori School
For the 2021-2022 academic year, I was an Arts & Humanities teacher at a private Montessori school in Brooklyn, NY. I taught literature, creative writing, and social studies to 7th and 8th grade students everyday and visual art to the same group once a week. I also assisted with the group's French, music, and computer classes as needed. On a weekly basis, I taught visual art and current events to 4-6th grade students. I developed original lessons and projects for daily in-person instruction and Zoom learning when necessary.
One project I completed with all of my students was the Hope Nest, inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem "'Hope' is the thing with feathers." We studied the poem and then wrote poems that we tied up into scrolls and stuffed into each other's Hope Nests. Each student made a Hope Nest using papier-mâché and their choice of acrylic, tissue paper, feathers, and floral décor. We hung up the Hope Nests for display and waited until the end of the year to read the poems each Hope Nest contained. This opened up a whole conversation on the role of hope in our lives. Currently, I am interested in bringing this project to other places as a visiting artist. Contact me to discuss this possibility.
